Non-Crisis Resources: Firearm Storage & Suicidal Ideation

If you’re experiencing a mental health crisis and don’t feel safe with your firearms, the Colorado Firearm Safety Coalition can help. They can connect you with resources for temporary firearm storage while you address your mental health. Their experts can also guide you through the legal process. coloradofirearmsafetycoalition.org

Safe Firearm Storage Options:

  1. Family Member: A relative can legally store your firearms indefinitely.
  2. Friend: A friend can store your firearms for up to 72 hours. After 72 hours, a background check is required.
  3. Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL): Gun shops, ranges, and pawn shops with an FFL can store your firearms (typically for a fee). This is also an option for permanent firearm transfer requiring a background check.
  4. Red Flag Law (Protective Order): A legal process for temporary removal of firearms.

Additional Option: You can remove a non-regulated critical component of your firearm and give it to a trusted friend or family member. Our group leadership is also available to assist you with this.
